How will the Sealdah-Salt Lake Sector 5 Metro Line benefit commuters?
The East-West metro corridor in Kolkata will become a major lifeline for commuters as it will link several important localities and major landmarks. The two major railway terminals at Howrah and Sealdah will also be connected through this metro route. Moreover, Salt Lake Sector 5, Esplanade and BBD Bagh on the Green Line are prominent employment hubs. After the line became operational, it enhanced the connectivity for thousands of working professionals. Moreover, people going towards Howrah Railway Station can easily interchange from the metro through direct access to the railway station. Â
Further, this section will connect to Howrah Maidan with a 10.8 km underground section. The Esplanade to Howrah Maidan underwater metro, built under the Hooghly River, became operational on March 6, 2024. A 2.5-km-stretch between Sealdah and Esplanade is yet to be operational. The Phoolbagan metro station is the first underground station of the East-West metro route. The Green Line will finally connect Howrah with Teghoria, a developing locality in east Kolkata. In addition, Esplanade will be an interchange point for the Kolkata Metro Purple Line and Blue Line.Â
Sealdah to Salt Lake Metro Sector 5: Fare and timings
In a move that will allow faster commuting on the Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector 5 stretch, the Kolkata Metro Railway revised the timetable with a running time of 17 and 18 minutes instead of the previous 20 minutes. The new timetable has been in effect from April 16, 2024. The revised schedule is applicable from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, metro services on the stretch will run as per the previous timetable. The revision of the metro timings comes after an upgrade in technology on the Sealdah and Salt Lake Sector 5 stretch.
According to the new timetable, the timing of the first service has been changed to 7.05 AM instead of 7 AM from Salt Lake Sector 5 to Sealdah. The timings of the first and last services from both directions will remain the same. The last train will arrive at 7:30 PM.
The East-West metro corridor in Kolkata is equipped with the Communication Based Train Control system (CBTC), comprising Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and Automatic Train Operation (ATO). Metro services along the two stretches of the Green Line, covering Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector 5 and Esplanade to Howrah Maidan, were earlier operated on Automatic Train Protection (ATP).
The adoption of the latest technology is expected to save running time by two minutes. That is, the running time will be 18 minutes instead of the present 20 minutes on the west-bound route while it has been reduced by three minutes on the east-bound route to 17 minutes from the earlier frequency of 20 minutes.Â
