Kanchipuram is a leading city within Tamil Nadu and the region known as Tondaimandalam. Chennai lies 72 km away from Kanchipuram and the city is also famous for its temple-based architecture along with silk sarees and several landmarks. It is one of the biggest tourism hubs of the country while covering a total area of 36.14 square kilometers. The population of Kanchipuram was also estimated at 234,353 people as of the year 2011. Kanchipuram is a word in Tamil that means Kanchi (Brahma) and Puram (place of residence). It has been ruled by several kingdoms before the British reign and is famous for being one of the seven centres of pilgrimage for Vaishnavite Hindus.
