Kollam

Kerala, India, 691001

Kollam is also called Quilon and is an ancient seaport cum city along the Malabar coastline of the country. It lies approximately 71 km away from the capital of the State, Thiruvananthapuram. It is also headquarters to the District of Kollam. It is also the fourth biggest city in the State of Kerala and is famous for its coir production and cashew processing industries, while being a gateway for the famous Kerala backwaters. It is a leading hub for tourism in the country as well. Kollam has also been a robust trading and commercial hub from ancient years with a rich history of its own. It also houses one of the original churches founded by St. Thomas along with one of the 10 most ancient mosques in Kerala discovered by Malik Deenar as per legends. Governance and administration are taken care of by the Kollam City Corporation here. The area was founded in 1099 and has seven zones in total. It is also home to the Kollam Municipal Corporation and had a population of 397,419 people as of the year 2011. The coordinates of Kollam are 8.88°N 76.60°E.
