Kalimpong

Darjeeling District, West Bengal, India

Kalimpong is a leading municipality cum town within the State of West Bengal. It lies at 1,250 meters and is the headquarters for the District of Kalimpong as well. The town is also within the GTA (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration) and hosts the 27 Mountain Division of the Indian Army as well. Kalimpong is famous for its reputed educational institutions, with many of them being set up during the colonial rule of the British. The town overlooks the beautiful Teesta River while being a huge tourist landmark on account of its natural beauty, mountains, climate and horticulture. It has a famous flower market as well while the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang Buddhist Monastery is also worth visiting. The Kalimpong Science Centre was founded in 2008 under the DGHC and there is also the Delo Hill. The Kalimpong Municipality governs the town while the languages spoken here include Nepali, Bengali, and English. The total area of Kalimpong is 9.168 square kilometers while the population stood at 49,403 people as of the year 2011. The coordinates of Kalimpong are 27.06°N 88.47°E.

Kalimpong is home to several reputed educational institutions including Kalimpong College, Kalimpong Girls Higher Secondary School, Cluny Women’s College, Rockvale Management College, St. Augustine’s School, Kendriya Vidyalaya and many others. Leading hospitals here include the Army Hospital, District Hospital and the Seva Sadan Hospital. The Sivok railway station is accessible along with the Darjeeling railway station. The nearest airport to Kalimpong is at Bagdogra.
