Kargil is a leading city and the joint-capital of the Ladakh Union Territory, while being headquarters to the Kargil District. It is the second-biggest city in Ladakh after the city of Leh. It lies 204 km away from Srinagar and 234 km away from Leh. The name indicates a site between numerous forts, or a central location where people are able to reside. The region around this was known as Purig. Kargil has a chequered history of its own and had a population of 16,338 people as of the year 2011. The elevation of the city is at 2,676 meters. It is governed by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council and covers a total area of 2.14 square kilometers. The coordinates of Kargil are 34°33′N 76°08′E.
