Shimla

Shimla District, Himachal Pradesh, India

Shimla, also known as Simla, is one of the largest cities in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. In 1864, it was declared the summer capital, and since Independence, it has been the capital of Punjab. Later, it became the capital city of Himachal Pradesh. The city has Jakhoo in its northernmost point and Anndale in its southern part. It has Sanjauli in its eastern part and Chotta Shimla in the western region. The city is located in the south-western ranges of the Himalayas and is at 31.61°N 77.10°E, with an elevation of 2,206 metres. The city has a 9.2 kilometres stretch from east to west. The green belt in Shimla is spread over 414 hectares. The primary language of the populace is Hindi.
Infrastructure and Details
The Kalka–Shimla Railway line is popular for tourists visiting Shimla. Kalka is just 2.5 hours from Shimla, and Chandigarh is 3 hours and 15 minutes. On the other hand, Delhi and Manali are 7 hours away from Shimla. The road is well connected via NH 5, near Chandigarh. The city airport is at Jubbarhatti, 23 km from the middle of the city. Besides this, Chandigarh is its nearest option which is 116km from the city. The city’s central station easily connects with major cities. Some other prominent stations are the Nilgiri mountain railway, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, and Chhatrapati Shivaji station. Besides being a famous tourism centre, the city is renowned as a hub with options of prominent educational institutions. Some are Himachal Pradesh University and the Indian Institute of Advanced Study. It has four major medical colleges and hospitals: Indira Gandhi Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Kamla Nehru Hospital, and Indus Hospital.
