Madurai is a leading city in the State of Tamil Nadu and also the cultural capital of the State. It is also the administrative headquarters for the District of Madurai. It is governed by the Madurai City Corporation and has a chequered history of its own especially for its language and settlement related histories over several years. Madurai is also a tourism hub with several famous monuments including the Thirumalai Nayak Palace and Meenakshi Temple. It is also a centre for education and industries in the State. It is famous for its production of granite, rubber, automobiles, and chemicals. It covers 147.97 square kilometres with a population estimated at 1,470,755 people as of the year 2011. The coordinates of Madurai are 9.93°N 78.11°E.
