Dehradun District, Uttarakhand, India

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and is the biggest city in the State. It is the administrative headquarters of its district and is administered by the Dehradun Municipal Corporation. Dehradun lies in the Doon Valley, on the Himalayan foothills, while offering a beautiful landscape and connectivity to several tourist hubs like Mussoorie, New Tehri, Dhanaulti and more. Dehradun is also a major educational hub and contains numerous tourist landmarks. Dehradun is also known as the Abode of Drona. Dehradun was founded in 1817 and covers 196.48 square kilometers in total. The population of the city was 803,983 people in 2011. Tourist landmarks here include the Himalayan Gallery cum Regional Science Centre, Dehradun Zoo, Uttara Museum of Contemporary Art, Robber’s Cave, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and the Mindrolling Monastery. The Dehradun coordinates are 30.3165° N, 78.0322° E.
Infrastructure and Details
Dehradun has its own railway station and also the Jolly Grant Airport. The National Highway 7 also connects the area which is 248 km away from the National Capital, New Delhi. Reputed educational institutions here include the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Forest Research Institute, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Uttarakhand Ayurveda University, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, the Doon School, Welham Boys School, Welham Girls School and many others. The economy of the city is driven majorly by tourism and IT and ITeS along with agriculture. The city is also well connected to the National Highway 307. There are several bus networks available in the city. Leading hospitals here include the Max Super Specialty Hospital, Kanishk Surgical & Super Specialty Hospital, and the Shri Mahant Indiresh Hospital.
