September 1, 2023:Â The government has sanctioned a total of 1.19 crore housing units under its flagship Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) scheme, housing minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on August 31.
Speaking at a book-launch function in New Delhi, the minister said that the groundwork for over 113 lakh units for construction has also been done. Of these, 76.34 lakh units have been completed and delivered to the PMAY-U beneficiaries.
The minister pointed out that the PMAY-U mission promotes women’s empowerment. This is done by providing the property title either in the name of a female member of a family or in joint terms.
More than 94 lakh houses under the PMAY-U were in the name of women or joint ownership, the minister informed.
Puri also said that the government was using the newest technologies to build homes under the PMAY-U. According to him, 54 new technologies have been identified through a global challenge process. These are used in the construction of various lighthouse projects.
The ministry has implemented the PMAY-U scheme under the government’s housing-for-all mission since June 2015. Under the scheme, the Centre plans to provide financial assistance to implementing agencies for providing all-weather pucca houses with basic civic amenities to all eligible urban beneficiaries.
The implementation period of the PMAY-U scheme was earlier on March 31, 2022. To complete all the houses sanctioned under the scheme without changing the funding pattern and implementation methodology, the deadline has now been extended to March 31, 2024, except for the credit-linked subsidy scheme (CLSS) vertical.
