December 8, 2023: A total of 78.15 lakh houses have been built and delivered to beneficiaries under the urban component of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), government data till November 20. 2023, show. Based on the proposals received from states, a total of 118.63 lakh houses have been sanctioned under the PMAY-U scheme, minister of state for housing and urban affairs Kaushal Kishore told the Lok Sabha in a written reply on December 7.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) Mission intends to provide housing in urban areas. The Mission addresses urban housing shortage among EWS/LIG and MIG categories including slumdwellers by ensuring pucca houses. It provides Central assistance to the implementing agencies through states/Union Territories (UTs) and central nodal agencies (CNAs) for providing houses to all eligible families/beneficiaries.
This ministry, under the vision of housing for All, supplements the efforts of states by providing Central assistance under the scheme for the construction of houses for all eligible urban families since June 2015.
According to the statement, the PMAY-U is a demand-driven scheme, and the government of India has not fixed any target for the construction of houses under the scheme. Based on the demand for housing in urban areas, states prepare project proposals for Central assistance.
“The PMAY-U awards have been instituted with emphasis on grounding, completion, occupancy of houses sanctioned under the scheme,” the minister informed the Lower House.
