November 30, 2023: Adani Total Gas, co-promoted by Adani Group and TotalEnergies, on November 28, 2023, announced the initiation of a ‘Green Hydrogen Production and Blending Pilot Project’ in Ahmedabad. As part of this project, the company will employ the latest technologies to blend green hydrogen (GH2) with natural gas for over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in the city.
GH2 is produced using electrolysis of water with electricity generated from renewable sources. Green hydrogen blending is less carbon-intensive than burning gas but has the same heating capabilities. The project is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of FY 24-25, and the percentage of green hydrogen will be gradually increased in the blend to up to 8% or more, depending on regulatory approvals. After successfully completing the pilot project, hydrogen blended fuel will be supplied to larger parts of the city and other licence areas of Adani Total Gas. According to studies, an up to 8% hydrogen blend can reduce emissions by up to 4%.
Notably, in January 2023, the central government approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of such technologies. This mission will eventually help in the decarbonisation of the energy, transport and industrial sectors, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
