Superstar Aishwaya Rai Bachchan has been received a tax notice over non-payment of land tax in Maharashtra’s Nashik district.
An actor of international acclaim, Bachchan owns multiple properties across the length and breadth of India, including a one-hectare land parcel in Nashik. According to the notice issued on January 9, 2023, the reported land tax due against this property is Rs 21,960. The Bachchan family member will have to pay an additional Rs 10 towards the expenses made in sending the notice, bring her total liability to Rs 21,970.
Media reports say Bachchan, who owns a land parcel at Adwadi near Thangaon of Sinnar in Nashik, has allegedly not paid the land tax for over a year. The former Miss World is also reported ignored the repeated reminders over the land tax dues by the district administration.
For the uninitiated, land tax falls under the broad definition of property, and owners also have to pay annual tax on their plot and land parcel holdings as well aside from paying property tax for flats, apartments, bungalows, mansions and villas.

In case the Pink Panther-fame start fails to pay the land tax within 10 days of the issue of the notice, action will be taken against her under Section 174 of the Maharashtra Land Revenue Act, 1966.
Section 174 of the law delas with penalty for default of payment of land revenue. Â According to the section, the collector may in the case of a wilful defaulter impose a penalty not exceeding 25% of the due amount if any installment of land revenue or any part thereof is not paid within one month after the prescribed date. Authorities, however, said they have been informed that Bachchan will make the payment in the next two days, Moneycontrol reported.
Aishwaya Rai Bachchan, who was most recently seen in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan, is among the 12,000 landowners in Sinnar who have received a tax notice over payment default.
“We did issue notice to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on January 9 for outstanding against unpaid NA tax of over Rs 21,000. We had given her 10 days for the payment, and we were informed today that the outstanding amount will be paid by Bachchan in the next two days. The notice was issued as a routine exercise and along with her we had issued notices to several other individuals and firms,” tehsildar of the Sinnar district Eknath B told Moneycontrol.
