According to the Hindu calendar, there are certain days, which are looked upon as auspicious – for example, Akshaya Tritiya, Dussehra, Gudi Padwa, Dhanteras, etc. Indians are usually particular about the auspicious time or ‘shubh muhurat’, when it comes to important events such as buying a property, or giving the token money for a new property, or even shifting to a new house. Sentiments in the residential real estate sector are usually high during festivals and auspicious dates likes Akshaya Tritiya. This also leads to promotional offers by developers, in a bid to encourage buyers.

Each festival has its significance and most of them are considered as good times, to begin something new, says Rajat Rastogi, executive director of the Runwal Group. “Home buyers, as well as developers, seek auspicious dates to start or buy anything new. While buyers look for festive offers and schemes, developers try to maximise their sales or launch new projects during these times. The auspicious dates are believed to have positive energy and vibes and hence, rituals like bhoomi puja, Vastu puja, or havan, are all done on these dates,” Rastogi adds.

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the month of Vaishakha. It is an auspicious time to start a new business and buying metals, gold, silver, vehicle and house. Metals symbolise Goddess Lakshmi and investing in gold and silver on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to attract prosperity.

Akshaya Tritiya rituals for your home

When to come to shifting to a new house, several rituals are followed. One such important ritual of Vastu Shastra is the Griha Pravesh. “A ‘kalash sthapana’ is the simplest ritual that one can do, if one does not wish to perform an elaborate puja. To enter the new house by doing a ‘kalash sthapana’, one has to fill a copper pot with water and grains and place a coin inside it. Also draw a swastika with red kum kum on the pot. Cover a coconut with a red cloth and keep it on the pot. Carry cowry shells or conch shells and later keep them in the treasure box. Light a ghee diya and pray to God for peace, prosperity, happiness and good health and offer Prasad. It is also believed that Akshaya Tritiya symbolises purity. Hence, along with other coloured flowers, use white flowers like jasmine for the puja and preferably wear white clothes with gold or silver border,” advises Dhamani.

While performing a Griha Pravesh, ensure that the main door of the house is clean and decorated well and has sufficient light. The main door is an access point for prosperity and positive vibes into the house. So, adorn the threshold with auspicious symbols like a Swastika and Laxmi feet (entering the house), along with rangoli and hang a floral toran. “One can call a priest and do a Vastu puja, Ganesh puja or Navagraha Shanti at home. If possible, perform a small havan at home using aromatic. A havan is a sacred custom, which has a cleansing effect. Plants and trees have an important role in activating positive energy. So, try and plant trees around your house on the day of the Griha Pravesh. Opt for trees such as peepul, amla, mango, etc., as planting trees on this auspicious day gives abundant fruits,” concludes Dhamani.
