All about documents required for passport issuance

As the entire passport application procedure is completed online, the applicant must provide all required documents for the passport to be issued and shipped on time. This blog will attempt to detail the documents required for a passport.

When travelling outside of India, you must have a passport. In addition to allowing you to go abroad, your passport serves as identification. As a result, before granting a passport, it is subjected to extensive inspection. The applicant must present a variety of documents to confirm his identity, address, age, and other passport qualifying requirements.

Passports are issued in a variety of kinds, both new and reissued. Other specific categories include Diplomat Passports, Residents of Jammu and Kashmir or Nagaland, Minor Passports, Indian Citizenship other than by birth, and many more. Then there’s passport re-issue for a variety of reasons such as name change, address change, renewal, name correction and so on.

Each of these application categories requires the applicant to provide a list of papers. Documents required for a passport for an adult

Address proof

  • Water bill
  • Proof of gas connection
  • Income tax assessment order
  • Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head
  • Telephone (landline or postpaid mobile bill)
  • Aadhaar card
  • Electricity bill
  • Election commission Photo ID card
  • Spouse’s copy of passport
  • Rent agreement
  • Photo of the bank account passbook

Birth date proof

  • Birth certificate
  • Life insurance policy bond
  • Copy of the applicant’s service record (only for Government employees) or the Pay Pension Order (only for retired Government employees), duly attested/certified by the officer/in-charge of the Administration of the applicant’s concerned Ministry/Department.
  • Transfer/School leaving/Matriculation Certificate issued by the school last attended/recognised educational board
  • Voter ID card
  • Aadhaar card
  • PAN card
  • Driving licence
  • A declaration made by the head of the orphanage/child care home on the organisation’s official letterhead certifying the applicant’s DOB.

 

Documents required for a passport for a minor

Address proof

  • Water bill
  • Electricity bill
  • Telephone (landline or postpaid mobile bill)
  • Aadhaar card
  • Photo of the bank account passbook

 

Birth proof

  • Birth certificate
  • Life insurance policy bond
  • Aadhaar card
  • PAN card
  • Transfer/School leaving/Matriculation Certificate issued by the school last attended/recognised educational board
  • A declaration made by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on the organisation’s official letterhead certifying the applicant’s DOB.

 

Documents required for re-issuing of passport

An applicant may request a passport reissue for the following reasons:

  • Change of Address 
  • Exhaustion of Pages
  • Validity Due to Expire
  • Validity Expired
  • Renewal of Short Validity Passport (SVP)
  • Lost/Stolen Passport
  • Damaged Passport

Change in Existing Personal Particulars

The following are the documents needed to apply for a passport reissue:

Old passport in original with self-attested photocopies of its first and last two pages, including the ECR/Non-ECR page (previously ECNR) and the page of observation (if any), made by the Passport Issuing Authority, and the validity extension page, if any, in the case of a passport with a short validity.

Present address proof

  • Water bill
  • Proof of gas connection
  • Income tax assessment order
  • Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head
  • Telephone (landline or postpaid mobile bill)
  • Aadhaar card
  • Electricity bill
  • Election commission photo ID card
  • Spouse’s copy of passport

Additional documents while applying for re-issue of passport in specific cases

Renewal of Short Validity Passport (SVP) Proof of documents to validate the issuance of Short Validity Passport (SVP)
Lost or Stolen Passport
  • Proof of Date of Birth
  • As per Annexure F, affidavit stating how and where the Passport got lost/ damaged
  • Police report
  • Present address proof
  • Documentary proof for any one of the Non-ECR (previously ECNR) categories 
  • Self-attested photocopy of first two and last two pages, including ECR/Non-ECR page of old Passport
Damaged Passport
  • As per Annexure F, affidavit stating how and where the Passport got lost/ damaged
  • Proof of Date of Birth
  • Proof of Present Address
  • Police report in original
  • Self-attested photocopy of first two and last two pages, including ECR/Non-ECR page of old Passport
Change of Appearance Recent photograph (only required for DPC/SPC/CSC applications). The photo should be the most recent, displaying the most recent appearance. A notarised statement is required if Sikhs want to modify their turban photos to clean-shaven photos or vice versa.
