In August 2023, the Karnataka government formally launched the Gruha Jyothi Scheme even though the scheme came into effect on July 1, 2023. Under the scheme, the state promises to provide 200 units of free electricity to households in the state. At the launch, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said 2.14 Crore consumers were eligible for the scheme. The state government has also decided to merge the exiting Kuteera Jyothi, Amrutha Jyothi and Bhagya Jyothi schemes under the Gruha Jyothi.
What is Gruha Jyothi Scheme? What benefits does it offer?
The state-sponsored scheme promises to provide zero-electricity bills to those consuming average electricity less than 200 units. The average consumption will be taken based on the usage in 2022-23.
Aimed at improving the livelihood of the people of the state, the scheme would make available 200 units of power free to eligible households in Karnataka, helping them save up to Rs 1,000 in electricity bill every month. However, the government has ordered consumers who exceed the consumption of 200 units to pay the full electricity bill amount.
How will the average electricity consumption be calculated under the scheme?
The following formula will be used to calculate the average electricity consumption under the Gruha Jyothi scheme:
Average electricity consumption = Average of the electricity units consumed between April 2022 to March 2023 + 10% increase
