Amravati Airport: Operation timeline
Amravati Airport, managed by the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), is expected to open in July 2024. However, according to MADC’s vice-chairman and managing director, Swati Pandey, the project has not yet received DGCA approval. Amravati Airport: Project development
The airstrip at Amravati Airport was built by the Public Works Department in 1992. It was taken over by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in 1997 and transferred to the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC). In 2014, the Maharashtra government leased the airport to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for 60 years at a monthly rent of Rs 100,000. The AAI planned to develop the airport, including extending the runway to 2,500 meters to accommodate larger aircraft.
Land acquisition for the project began in the early 2010s and was completed by 2013. However, due to funding issues, development work did not start until 2019 when the foundation stone was laid. This first phase included extending the runway, building a new apron and constructing an isolation bay, taxiway and new terminal building. Night landing facilities are planned but await government approvals and funding. The airport is part of the UDAN-RCS scheme, which aims to boost regional connectivity. Once operational, the airport will provide better travel options for residents and businesses in the region.
