Atal Setu Goa: Fact guide

The Goa Bridge connects Porvorim and Panjim.

The Atal Setu Goa is a Rs 546-crore project inaugurated by Prime minister Narendra Modi in August 2019. It was constructed with an intent to reduce the traffic on the other bridge built across the Mandovi River. This Goa bridge is named after India’s former Prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Initially, the ferry was the principal way of transportation over the Mandovi River between the Panaji and the Betim regions. The first Mandovi Bridge was built in the 1970s to manage the traffic congestion, but it collapsed. The second bridge was completed in 1998 to accommodate heavy-vehicles. In 2014, construction of the Atal Setu Goa Bridge started.

Atal Setu Goa: Route

The Atal Setu Bridge is located in north Goa’s subdistrict Bardez. It connects the Tiswadi, the Patto Centre, the Alto-Betim Porvorim, the Patto Colony and the Goa Housing Board.

The Atal Setu Goa connects Porvorim and Panjim. It spans the Mandovi River with four lanes of NH-66. With 5.1 km, it is also known as India’s third-largest bridge. The four-lane Goa bridge is 21-m wide, 30-m high. The longest span is 150 mile, with steel and concrete pylons and four water piers. Due to its 30-m height, two and three-wheelers, as well as bullock carts, are not permitted to use the Goa bridge.

The proposal for the bridge was introduced by the National Highway Authority of India(NHAI) in 2014 and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) constructed it.
