September 11, 2023: Flight operations from the Maryada Purshottam Sri Ram International Airport in Ayodhya will start in November, director of the Ayodhya International Airport Vinod Kumar told media.
The development work includes an extension of the existing runway from 1500m X 30m to 2200m x 45m for the operation of Code-C type of aircraft under IFR condition, an interim terminal building, an ATC tower, a fire station, a car parking area, a new apron and allied city-side and airside infrastructure.
While 78% of the work for the terminal building is complete, authorities are done with the construction of Phase-1 of the airport runway. The air traffic control (ATC) tower and essential facilities for night landing and foggy conditions are also complete.
Come November and the upcoming airport in Ayodhya will start running flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad, he added.
Depending on the demand, the airport might also start operations for other cities as well in future, Kumar added.
Located 8 km from the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, the airport is coming up along the Gorakhpur-Lucknow National Highway on 821 acre of land.
Part of the Centre’s Regional Connectivity Scheme UDAN, the Ayodhya airport, the fifth airport in UP, is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore.
The new interim terminal building with an area of 6250 sqm is equipped to manage 300 passengers during peak hours. Passengers’ facilities include eight check-in-counters, three conveyor belts (one in departure and two in arrival hall), car parking for seventy-five cars and bus parking. The airport will be PRM (Passenger with reduced mobility) compliant.
