June 7, 2024: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to embark on the construction of an 18-kilometre-long underground tunnel road in Bangalore, Karnataka, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the city. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 8,100 crore, translating to roughly Rs 450 crore per kilometre, with a target completion date of January 1, 2025.
This tunnel will establish a crucial link between Esteem Mall in Hebbal, located in north Bangalore, and the Central Silk Board junction in the southern part of the city. It will feature five entry and exit points strategically placed along its route. It is anticipated that this new infrastructure could significantly reduce travel time to a mere 20-25 minutes. The tunnel is designed ith a height of 10 metre, accommodating traffic speeds ranging between 40 kmph and 60 kmph.
The planned entry and exit points include locations such as the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) quarters at Central Silk Board, Lalbagh, Bangalore Golf Club, Palace Grounds and a vacant government land adjacent to Esteem Mall in Hebbal.
While an elevated corridor was considered as an alternative, it would entail greater tree felling, land acquisition, and prolonged traffic disruption lasting three to four years. In contrast, the underground tunnel presents a more economically viable solution. To sustain its maintenance, a user fee system will be implemented. Given the economic feasibility and potential for minimal environmental impact and disruption, the construction of the tunnel road emerges as the preferred option for addressing Bangalore’s traffic challenges.
