The Rail Infrastructure Development Company (Karnataka), K-RIDE, has said that the Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed a memorandum of understanding to transfer land at Jalahalli in Bangalore for the upcoming suburban rail project.
According to the officials, the 25.2-km Mallige line of the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP), from Benniganahalli to Chikkabanavara, has moved to the execution phase. The land acquisition, boundary wall construction, surveys, geotechnical investigation and the preparation of a ground penetration report have been completed. However, the batching plant’s establishment is underway at three locations – Jalahali, Hebbal and Benniganahalli.
According to an official release, the railway land of 157 acres had been given to K-RIDE for corridor 2, and a 5.11-acre private land had also been acquired. In addition, 2.72-acre government land has been handed over to K-RIDE by Leather Industries Development Corporation, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University. Moreover, a 5-acre BDA land is to be acquired for the project.
Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project: Construction
The Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project is a commuter rail network covering 149.35 km with 64 stations. The feasibility report and final detailed project report prepared by RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Service) have proposed four lines in this project. The suburban rail project was approved for construction by the Centre in October 2020. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 15,767 crore.
According to an earlier plan, the total route will cover 148.17 km will be built at a cost of Rs. 15,767 crore through a combination of project financing and land monetisation. There were 57 new stations in the plan and almost 60% of the places were designed to have multi-modal connectivity.

Bengaluru suburban rail project to be extended to Kolar, Mysuru, Gauribidanur
June 9, 2023: In a review meeting with the officials of K RIDE on June 7, 2023, Karnataka’s infrastructure and industries minister MB Patil directed the officials to extend Bengaluru’s suburban rail project to neighbouring towns. The decision was taken to boost connectivity to the IT capital from the surrounding towns. According to K RIDE, the suburban rail project will now be extended to Mysuru, Gauribidanur – Hindupur and Kolar areas. The minister further added that the suburban trains would operate with a time-frequency of 10 minutes, covering most parts of the city.
