BMC sends notices to 5 metro contractors for not paying property tax

The BMC has warned to attach the property of the contractors if the property tax isn’t paid in seven days.

April 18, 2024: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on April 16, 2024 issued final notices to five contractors working on various metro rail projects for non-payment of around Rs 326.22 crore as property tax, mention media reports.

The BMC has warned to attach the property of the contractors if the property tax isn’t paid in seven days. In March 2024, the BMC had sent notices to these contractors to pay the property tax within 21 days, which was not adhered to. According to the BMC release, of the five contractors, four had not paid property tax from FY 2016-17 and one didn’t pay from FY 2010-11.

According to the agreement signed between the contractors and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), the contractors are responsible for paying property tax of the plots where the various metro rail projects are being developed.

While on the topic of property tax, note that the BMC has extended the last date for property tax payment for FY 2023-24 to May 25, after which it will take strict action.
