Growing a castor tree: Growth requirements

The first step is to choose the perfect spot to grow the tree. Choose a place that receives direct sunlight for more than six hours daily. The soil should be well drained and have a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. The ideal temperature should be around 25 to 30 °C. While planting seeds, you should remember that the trees grow really large and should be at least 3 foot apart to allow for proper air circulation.

Planting seeds

You should purchase good quality seeds from the seller and keep in mind the climatic conditions of your region while picking up a variety. Before sowing them directly into the soil, keep them in warm water for a day to allow the seed coat to soften and promote germination.

Now dig a 1 to 2-inch deep hole in the garden and place the seed in it. Now, you can refill the soil. You should also make sure that you leave adequate space between any two seeds.

Taking care of castor tree

You should also add a well-balanced, all-purpose fertiliser before the spring season to promote plant growth. If you are unsure how much to use, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. Also, apply a thick layer of mulch to retain moisture in the soil. Mulching also helps in regulating the soil temperature and also suppresses the weeds.

While a castor tree does not require regular pruning, check the dead branches and make sure you remove them from time to time. Do not forget to wear gloves while doing so because the skin can get irritated if it comes in contact with the tree sap.

Add insecticidal soap or neem oil to keep insects and pests away and to protect the tree from diseases.

Castor tree: Toxicity

The seeds of the castor tree have a substance named ricin that is highly toxic to human beings and can be fatal if ingested. The substance also causes skin and eye irritation, and if you are dealing with castor seeds, you should not bring them close to your eyes or mouth and wear gloves at all times.
