The Centre has approved the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) for Maharashtra’s Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. This move will help several infrastructure projects in the region.
Media reports suggest that this decision was made post approval by the National Coastal Zone Management Authority (NCZMA) of the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) 2019 on August 1, 2023. This was followed by final notification by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MOEFCC).
A FPJ report mentioned that under the new recommendations the CZMA has reduced the limit to 50 m from 100 m from the high-tide level for creeks and rivers. Additionally, local authorities can approve of construction activities upto 300 sqm. Also, fishermen can also use the land here for activities such as fish drying, net repairing, and boat maintenance. Under the new regulations, development of shacks, toilets and common seating areas for tourists will be easier.
