July 29, 2024: The government of the Union Territory of Chandigarh has revoked the building plans and occupancy certificate for Godrej Properties’ commercial project Godrej Eternia in the city’s Industrial Area Phase I. This action was taken due to alleged violations of environmental clearance conditions, specifically regarding the requirement to obtain permission from the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife. Godrej Properties has announced plans to challenge this order.
In a regulatory filing, Godrej Properties stated that the “Office of the Estate Officer, UT, Chandigarh, via its order dated July 24, 2024, received by the company on July 25, has revoked the approved building plans and the occupancy certificate (OC) dated June 09, 2015, for our commercial building Godrej Eternia in Chandigarh, citing alleged violations of conditions of environmental clearance.”
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh has instructed the enforcement branch to ensure compliance with the order and submit a compliance report within a week. The enforcement agencies have been directed to prevent the building from being used for habitation following the revocation of the occupancy certificate.
The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) in Chandigarh had reported that the building misrepresented issues regarding wildlife clearance and altered the scope of work beyond what was approved in the 2015 clearance. Following this, the Chandigarh Estate Office issued a show-cause notice last year, stating that the building plan and occupancy certificate were obtained through “misrepresenting and concealing facts.”
