Chennai’s Broken Bridge is a non-functional civil structure, which is popular with locals and visitors for its panoramic views and perfect sunsets. The bridge runs across the Adyar estuary, bordering the backend of the Theosophical Society. Built in 1967 from Adyar to Srinivasapuram, the bridge collapsed a decade later and was never repaired.

Due to its scenic appeal, more than 200 bird species visit the area during the migratory season. The bridge has been featured in several movies. Even though the Adyar estuary is a hotspot of biodiversity, it may not be safe to visit the area, say, experts and locals, amid the tremendous rise in crime rates in the area.

‘It’s a recreational spot where the majestic Adyar River joins the Bay of Bengal. But, it has become unsafe for the public to be here. There are no streetlights or security cameras. While policemen and women patrol the area, it’s restricted to limited hours. The road that leads to the Broken Bridge ends there, so, even if you want to get out of the place, you’ll have to take the same road. Hence, it’s not advisable for anyone to go there by themselves, especially for women,’ Nanditha Ram Satagopan, a member of the Madras Naturalists Society and the Young Naturalists Network, was quoted by The New Indian Express.
