January 4, 2024: In a significant move to enhance Lucknow’s infrastructure, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on January 2, 2024, approved the construction of the East-West Corridor for the Lucknow Metro. This corridor, spanning 11.16 km with 12 stations, is set to connect Vasant Kunj to Charbagh, traversing through the congested areas of Old Lucknow.
Currently, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation operates the North-South Corridor, a 22.88 km route from Munshi Pulia to Amausi airport, featuring 22 stations. The new Charbagh-Vasant Kunj route marks the city’s second metro corridor. The first corridor was successfully commissioned 36 days before the deadline, showcasing efficient project completion in the urban transport infrastructure sector and avoiding cost overruns.
Following the chief minister’s approval, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation is now in the process of submitting the detailed project report (DPR) for the second corridor. The DPR will undergo scrutiny by the Cabinet and the Public Investment Board for final clearance. The proposed Charbagh-Vasant Kunj corridor comprises a 4.286 km elevated section and a 6.879 km underground stretch.
Featuring a total of 12 stations, seven will be underground-Charbagh, Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, Pandeyganj, City Station, KGMU Crossing, and Nawazganj-while four will be elevated-Thakurganj, Balaganj, Sarfarazganj, Musa Bagh, and Vasant Kunj. With an estimated cost of Rs 5,880 crore, the corridor is expected to be completed within five years. Once operational, the East-West corridor aims to alleviate congestion in the Old City, enhance metro commuter traffic, and generate increased revenue for the city.
