Delhi L-G launches Dilli Gramodaya Abhiyan to develop urbanised villages

The ‘Dilli Gramodaya Abhiyan’ campaign has a dedicated budget exceeding Rs 800 crore.

December 4, 2023: Delhi’s Lieutenant-General (L-G) VK Saxena on December 2, 2023, launched the ‘Dilli Gramodaya Abhiyan’ from Northwest Delhi’s Jaunti village with the purpose of developing the city’s urbanised villages. Financed and executed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the campaign has a dedicated budget exceeding Rs 800 crore. These funds will be allocated for the establishment and enhancement of essential infrastructure, scientific livestock management, livelihood initiatives, healthcare facilities, water management and efficient land use, among other objectives.

The campaign kicked off with the initiation of work on Delhi’s inaugural grazing ground in Jaunti village, covering a 7-acre plot. This ground aims to provide fodder for approximately 4,000 livestock in Jaunti and its neighbouring areas, offering the community an unobstructed green space. Adjacent to the grazing ground, a water body will undergo revitalisation within a week. The grazing ground’s design incorporates a peripheral water channel to facilitate rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.

Saxena actively participated in the campaign by planting saplings of Moringa and grasses like Napier grass on the ground. He highlighted the significance of this initiative, noting that the introduction of a grazing ground in Delhi will provide a conducive ecosystem for stray cattle, preventing them from roaming on roads, scavenging from garbage dumps and facing issues related to malnutrition and accidents.

Saxena, who has adopted Jaunti as one of the four villages for developing as model villages said that same effort would be made to make all villages self-sustainable and gave the example of neighbouring Qutabgarh Village, where lot of infrastructure development projects are being undertaken and a stadium is on the verge of completion.

Under the newly-launched Dilli Gramodaya Abhiyan, essential amenities will be extended to urbanised villages to enhance living conditions. The campaign entails crafting an individualised action plan for each village through collaborative efforts with the residents. This plan aims to uplift the quality of basic infrastructure, health and sports facilities, civic services, horticultural enhancements and water management.

Earlier this year, the L-G adopted five villages in northwest Delhi- Qutabgarh, Jaunti, Nizampur, Deorala and Rawta– with the vision of transforming them into self-sustainable model villages. Notably, Qutabgarh, adopted in February 2023, has already witnessed substantial development across various sectors. Encouraged by the positive response from the villagers regarding the ongoing improvements in Qutabgarh, a similar model village development plan was initiated for Nizampur, Jaunti and Rashidpur in July 2023.
