February 15, 2024: Delhi lieutenant governor V K Saxena gave approval for the acquisition of land in southwest Delhi for completion of the Urban Extension Road II (UER-II) project, according to media reports. The UER-II has been planned to decongest Delhi by creating a bypass between north and southwest Delhi.
The LG approved the acquisition of over two bighas of land at Bharthal village that was required for the completion of the project and the non-acquisition of this land parcel has delayed the project by seven years, Raj Niwas officials said, as cited in media reports.
In April 2016, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) requested for acquisition of the land at Bharthal village in southwest Delhi. However, the acquisition process could not be completed due to several litigations, thus delaying the project. The Urban Extension Road II is proposed in the Delhi Master Plan as the third Ring Road for Delhi aimed at decongesting Dhaula Kuan and other sections of both outer and inner Ring Roads, the official said as per reports.
The UER-II, with a length of 75.6-kilometre, was proposed by the DDA from NH-1 to NH-2 connecting areas such as Narela, Bawana and Rohini in north Delhi to Dwarka Sub City, IGI Airport and Gurgaon. The upcoming route is expected to reduce travel time to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport to around 20 minutes.
The UER-II will also connect all the major national highways in the western side of Delhi including NH-1, NH-10, NH-8 and NH-2.
Once operational, the UER-II will offer an alternative route to commuters and freight traffic between southern and eastern parts of Haryana, including districts of Ambala, Panipat, Karnal, Rohtak and Bahadurgarh to Delhi and Gurgaon and further up to Rajasthan.
