December 18, 2023: The Ghaziabad localities of Sahibabad and Indirapuram will soon receive metro connectivity as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans for the expansion of the Delhi Metro network’s Blue Line, according to media reports. The Blue Line, which connects Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida Electronic City metro station and to Vaishali, will extend across the Delhi-Meerut expressway via Indirapuram and Vaishali to Sahibabad in Ghaziabad.
The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) and UP Housing Board have agreed to a 50:50 fund-sharing formula to extend the Blue Line from Noida to Ghaziabad. The Uttar Pradesh government will bear 80% of the costs through GDA and UP Housing Board and make equal contributions. The remaining 20% of the cost will be borne by the Centre. According to an earlier plan, the state government was to bear 50% of the expenses, while the Centre would have to bear 20%. The remaining 30% was to be borne by GDA, the Housing Board, and the Municipal Corporation.
The Delhi Metro is preparing a fresh report on the metro route from Electronic City to Sahibabad. The proposed project has an estimated cost of Rs 1,517 crore.
The extension of the Delhi Metro Blue Line will benefit passengers travelling towards Meerut, as Sahibabad will serve as an important interchanging point between the Metro and the Rapid Rail. The Anand Vihar ISBT Metro stations on the Blue Line will also have an interface with Rapid Rail. Currently, the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor is operational from Sahibabad to Duhai Depot.
