Golden (Silver) Line metro project status

The Silver Line is currently in the construction stage. Currently, tunnelling work is taking place along this metro corridor and making significant progress. In March 2025, a 91-meter-long Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) successfully excavated a 1,550-meter tunnel between the Kishangarh and Vasant Kunj metro stations.

Delhi Metro Golden Line to connect IGI airport T1 and T3

October 30, 2025: Delhi Metro will construct a new metro station on the upcoming Golden Line, which will connect Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 with Terminal 3. At present, Terminals 2 and 3 are close to each other but terminal 1 is situated few kilometres away. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said the new integrated metro station will connect Aerocity directly to Terminal 1, providing commute between terminals, as mentioned in media reports.

Currently, the Airport Metro Express Line, also known as Orange Line, connects to YT3, while the Magenta Line connects to T1. However, there is no direct connectivity between T1 and T3.

Silver line metro construction details

The Delhi Metro’s Silver line corridor will comprise 15 stations and cover 23.62 km. There will be an elevated section including a 2.4-km, six-lane elevated flyover in a double-deck system from Sangam Vihar to Ambedkar Nagar and one underpass at Saket G Block.

Once operational, the line will provide smooth connectivity to commuters and save time. It will include interchange facilities with Yellow line, Airport Express line and Violet line (Kashmere Gate to Ballabhgarh).

The metro project will involve complex civil engineering work encompassing the construction of a 5 km-long twin tunnel, cut-and-cover tunnel box, underground ramp and multiple underground stations.

Features and facilities

Tughlakabad Station on the Silver line, providing an interchange facility with the Violet line, is an elevated metro station at level 4. It has ATMs and food kiosks for commuters. The metro stations will include all essential facilities, including lifts and elevators.

Some of the key features of the interchange facility include:

  • Four levels of underground station
  • Platform will be located at the lowest level
  • Roof level will be at the ground level
  • Parking facility will be available at the underground level but above the platform level
  • Similarly, concourse will be above the platform level

The new station has been designed as a four-level underground structure. The platform will be built at the lowest level, around 23 metre in depth. The concourse will be constructed above the platform and an entire floor will be allotted for parking facility. The parking will be 23 metre in depth, which will make it one of the deepest parking facilities on the Delhi Metro network.

Depot

The Tughlakabad station will have a depot connection with Vasant Kunj Sector-D station. Moreover, Tughlakabad station will be connected to the existing Sarita Vihar depot via a tunnel, which will cater to trains from the Silver Line along with existing Violet Line operations.

Tunnel

In March 2025, the DMRC achieved a major milestone on the Aerocity-Tughlakabad line with the construction of its deepest tunnel so far. The tunnel was built at an average depth of 27 metre with a minimum depth of 18 metre and a maximum of 39 metre, surpassing the previous tunnel depths achieved by DMRC.

Subway lines

DMRC plans to build a short 100-m subway, connecting the existing metro station at Tughlakabad on the Violet Line with the new interchange station on Delhi Metro Golden Line. Commuters can access the platforms of the Tughlakabad station with the building that houses the elevated Violet Line platforms.

A pedestrian subway will connect the Aerocity metro station to the Mahipalpur locality, which will boost access to the IGI airport. The subway will be around 270 metre in length and will run below the Mahipalpur flyover on NH – 48.

Driverless train operations

With the completion of the Silver Line, the Delhi Metro will become one of the top five driverless metro train systems in the world. The DMRC plans to extend driverless train operations to the upcoming Phase-4 corridors. The move aims to promote automation, ensure safety and boost operational efficiency across the Delhi metro network. The Delhi Metro has expanded its Unattended Train Operation (UTO) network with a total of 69 driverless trains currently running on the Pink Line and Magenta Line.

What was the Silver Line renamed as the Golden Line?

In January 2024, the DMRC decided to change the colour code of the Delhi Aerocity- Tughlakabad corridor from silver to golden to ensure better visibility and convenience for passengers. According to an official statement, the DMRC said the decision was taken since the golden colour can be displayed more prominently and clearly on the trains rather than silver, which tends to get mixed with the overall silvery texture of the stainless steel body of the metro trains. Therefore, the selection of golden as the colour code would ensure better visibility on trains and will be more convenient for the passengers.

Delhi Metro Silver Line to be extended to Terminal 1

The upcoming Silver Line between Tughlaqabad and Aerocity is likely to be extended to Terminal 1. The proposed line is expected to be ready by 2025. The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) has sought check-in facilities to be provided at the Botanical Garden metro station for passengers flying out of T1.

Aerocity Metro Station to have the longest platform

The Aerocity Metro Station on the Silver Line will have the longest platform among all the metro stations on this corridor. The underground metro stations in Delhi Metro’s Phase 4 are around 225 metre. However, the platform, construction work for which has begun, will be 289 metre. The platform has been designed to accommodate heavy passenger traffic as the metro station will serve as a triple interchange facility with connectivity among the Airport Express Line, the Silver Line, RRTS corridor to Gurgaon, Manesar and Alwar.

The metro station will be built 23 metre underground to provide easy access to the other two lines, providing a transit network connecting Faridabad, South Delhi and West Delhi to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. There will be three entry/exit points. One will link the business hub of Aerocity and the other two will connect to the NH8 and Mahipalpur to the station.

Real estate impact of Delhi Metro Silver line

Enhanced connectivity

The expansion of the Delhi Metro network through the Golden (Silver) Line project is expected to significantly enhance the connectivity within the city. The metro route, which starts from Tughlakabad in South Delhi, will have interconnectivity through other lines, enabling smooth access for commuters travelling to and from South Delhi areas. With a link to the Delhi Airport Express Line, reaching the Delhi airport will become easy for the residents.

Boost to commercial real estate

With the development of infrastructure, the commercial real estate segment in South Delhi is expected to witness a significant boost, especially in retail and office spaces. Further, the Aerocity link will push business activities in the region, augmenting the growth of commercial real estate.

Rise in rental housing demand

The improved access will enhance the liveability of the region along the metro corridor. This is expected to boost the demand for rented properties. Areas with good connectivity to the airport line are likely to see an increased demand by students, working professionals and airport employees. Localities within a radius of 1-2 km from metro stations are expected to see a sharp growth.

Increase in property prices

The rise in property demand and steady development of the region near the metro corridor are likely to result in an increase in property prices. This will benefit property investors who are looking to earn higher returns.

Housing.com News Viewpoint

The Silver Line metro is expected to boost connectivity in Delhi, especially in the southern part of the city. Moreover, the corridor will have interchanges with four other metro lines, easing accessibility to different parts of the city.

Property prices and rental rates in the South Delhi localities are quite high compared to other parts of the city and look profitable at present owing to the upcoming metro project. Hence, this is an idea time to invest in the area to earn sound returns since the prices and rental rates are expected to see an upward trend.
