August 28, 2023: Plans are underway to build a subway connecting to the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal-2 (T2) with the IGI Airport Metro Station, Hindustan Times reported.
Currently, passengers have to walk a distance of 500 metre from T2 to reach to the metro station, which is located at the IGI Airport Terminal-3 (T3). The upcoming subway will reduce this distance to 70 metre, the report said citing official sources.
The Delhi Airport Metro, also known as the Delhi Metro Orange Line, the New Delhi Railway Station with the Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-3, before culminating at Dwarka Sector 21 Station. IGI Airport Terminal-1 and Terminal-2 are not directly connected with this metro line so far.
To be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 26.60 crore, the 10-metre wide and 4.2-metre high subway is expected to be completed in 21 months after the official approvals are in place and a tender for the construction is awarded.
The subway will be built using the box-pushing method. Commonly used in the building underpasses and subways below a road, the box-pushing method allows construction without disturbing the overhead structure.
Using this method, RCC boxes are cast outside in segments and pushed through heavy road embankments by jacking the required thrust bed.
“This method is much faster than the conventional cut-and-cover technology generally used for the construction of subways. The box pushing method will be used keeping in consideration the presence of utilities, buildings etc. in the surrounding areas, limited space availability and traffic management concerns,” the report quoted a DMRC official as saying.
