July 31, 2024: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for two new metro rail corridors – the Indore to Ujjain corridor and the Pithampur corridor in Madhya Pradesh. These two corridors will span a total distance of 84 kilometre (km). The DMRC has been entrusted with the task of providing technical advice for the development of the Indore-Ujjain and Indore-Pithampur metro corridors.
The first phase of the Ujjain, Indore, Pithampur metro project will connect key locations, especially from Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ujjain and Nanakheda Bus Stand to Lavkush Chauraha in Indore.
As per media reports, the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) has issued an official letter stating that the DMRC will be engaged in preparing the DPR for these routes. This initiative comes after a state government announcement regarding the construction of a metro rail track between Indore and Ujjain ahead of the 2028 Simhastha, a significant Hindu congregation organised once in 12 years in Ujjain.
In October 2023, trial runs for the first phase of Indore Metro began. The metro line is expected to begin operations in August 2024. The metro network will include 11 corridors spanning 124 km. Each train will have six coaches. Work on a 31 km-long metro line section in Indore is in progress.
