March 18, 2024: Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania on March 16, 2024, announced that early taxpayers would receive a 10% rebate on their annual property tax starting from the next financial year. This announcement was made during the inauguration of a new bus queue shelter in the Dispur area of the city.
The mayor stated that property owners who pay their property taxes within the first two months of the upcoming fiscal year, between April 1 and May 31, will be eligible for a 10% rebate on their property tax. Given the trend of low property tax payments in the current fiscal year and previous years, the corporation has decided to offer rebates to taxpayers.
This initiative follows a similar provision made by the corporation last year, aiming to incentivise more residents to fulfil their tax obligations and contribute to the city’s development. In an effort to tackle tax defaulting, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) issued more than 50 warrants against tax defaulters in February, with over Rs 2 crore expected to be recovered in taxes. Following the issuance of warrants, many defaulters have come forward to settle their dues, while legal actions have been initiated against the remaining defaulters
