Switch-off the powerÂ
Before starting the process, you need to switch off the power of the fixture circuit. Make sure that the electricity is no longer flowing. You can also use a tester to ensure the same. Don’t turn on the switch until the process is complete.Â
Remove detachable parts
If you can see any detachable parts, make sure to remove them first. This includes light bulbs, shades, covers, etc. Generally, a canopy piece is also present. It covers the hardware of the ceiling. Now, remove the plate so that you can see the wiring. If you are unable to do it alone, get help from your friend.Â
Remove wiring
When you remove the wiring, you will be able to see the capped wiring. There are usually three types of wires present, including green or copper, white, and black. Use a voltage tester to ensure that there is no current. Check how they are attached, or just take a picture so that you can put them back accurately. Now unscrew the connectors or caps to separate the fixture wiring from the wall or ceiling. If the wirings are uncapped, stop right away and call a professional instead.Â
Assemble the fixtureÂ
In this step, you have to spread all the fixture components on a flat surface. Now, assemble those parts after adjusting the chain length. Use pliers and screwdriver to open the chain link. Attach the adjusted chain to the light fixture on a flat surface and thread electric wires through the links.Â
Wiring of the light fixtureÂ
While wiring, you should always look at the manufacturer’s instructions, but these are some general instructions to be followed. New fixtures consist of two wires, black and white. Now, twist the end of the black ceiling wire with a black fixture wire and then twist on a wire nut. Repeat the same process with the white one.Â
The fixture wires may not be colour-coded if you are re-installing the old one. If that is the case, you need to choose one fixture wire and try connecting it to the black supply wire. Similarly, connect the other fixture wire to the white ceiling wire. Now, tuck the wires into the box carefully.Â
Hanging the light fixtureÂ
You often find a mounting strap with light fixtures. It is a metal strip that screws into the ceiling junction box. If you are replacing the fixture, use the existing strap.Â
Add bulbs
At this stage, the fixture will securely hang from the ceiling, but there is a possibility that mounting hardware will still be visible. If this is the case, you can slide up the canopy against the wall or ceiling. Now, make sure to tighten the locknut. If you have the bulbs, this is the time to screw them. If you don’t have them, purchase the one with the right size. You can restore the power now and switch on the lights to check if they are working.
