The bridge replaced a drawbridge that used to span Lake Nakaumi. When ships passed through, this drawbridge frequently caused traffic delays of up to 7 to 8 minutes, and only permitted vehicles under 14 tonne to pass. Another limitation was the drawbridge’s daily capacity of only 4,000 vehicles. Ever-increasing traffic necessitated the need for a new bridge. The Eshima Ohashi Bridge was constructed to replace the old drawbridge, offering a faster and more dependable means of crossing Lake Nakaumi.
