The government on March 6 approved the allocation of Rs 553.12 crore for the development and 4-laning of various sections of the National Highway-34 (NH34) in West Bengal. In a post on micro-blogging site X, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said the funds will be used for the development and 4-laning of the Krishnagar-Behrampore and Barasat-Barajaguli sections on the NH34, spanning across Nadia, Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas districts. The cumulative length of this project stands at 28.23 kilometre.
Work on four-laning of the NH34, which connects Kolkata with Dalkhola in Uttar Dinjapur, started nearly a decade ago. It passes through West Bengal longitudinally and connects the north-eastern states and neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The traffic on this highway increased substantially due to the implementation of the South Asia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) among SAARC Countries (Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh). The commercial traffic generated/originated from Haldia Port, Kolkata and Industrial areas in South Bengal heading towards North Bengal, North-eastern States, neighbouring countries has only a route i.e. the NH-34.
The enhancement of these roadway segments aims to alleviate congestion on the current 2- lane highway, fostering a more efficient movement of freight from south Bengal to north Bengal, the minister said.
