What is IFSC Code?

IFSC code (short for Indian Financial System Code) is a unique 11-digit alphanumeric system used to identify various bank branches that operate within the country, specifically all the branches that operate and participate in various electronic and digital transactions that take place around the country, pertaining to that specific bank branch.

The IFSC code identifies and keeps track of all bank transactions. It is appointed to every single bank branch by RBI.

How do I know if my IFSC Code is valid?

There are many ways you can verify the authenticity of your IFSC code

Firstly, refer to the documents given to you by your bank. Mainly the passbook and the Chequebook; these documents are critical in the functioning of transactions and have all the important details printed inside them. 

Secondly, you can go directly to the bank’s website to verify or identify your bank branch’s IFSC code. 

Thirdly, an authentic IFSC code should satisfy the following conditions:

  1. It should be 11 characters long.
  2. The first four characters should be uppercase alphabetic.
  3. The fifth character should be zero (0).
  4. The last six characters should usually be numeric but can be alphabetic in some cases too.

What if my bank branch recently had a merger?

Merged branches are assigned a new IFSC code unique to them. Contact your bank (or the newer branch) to enquire about your account details and the new IFSC code.
