New Garia Airport Metro Kolkata is a project under Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (KMRCL). This metro has many other names including Orange Line, Kolkata Metro Line 6, New Town Metro, Airport Metro, and Bypass Metro. This line has a total projected ridership of over five lakhs daily. The rapid transit connects New Garia with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport via other two satellite towns Salt Lake and New Town. This line is one of the important stretches of the metro in Kolkata as it connects the southern and eastern parts of the city with Kolkata Airport. The total distance of the metro line is 29.87 km.
This line had a project deadline of six years and was sanctioned by Mamta Banerjee in the budget of 2010-11. A total of Rs 3951.98 crore was devoted to this project to RVNL. The New Garia Airport is not operational yet and the work is still in progress. The work for this metro finally started on 14 February 2017 but it got delayed many times due to multiple issues.
