How to apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

The government will provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to eligible people under the scheme.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024.  Under the recently launched PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the government will provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to one crore eligible candidates. The scheme, for which the government has set aside an investment of Rs 75,000 crore, was announced by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

According to PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana National Portal data, 53,04,158 applications have been received till now. Around 13,94,283 housing units are covered and a subsidy of Rs 7,543.78 crore is released by the government.

Subsidy for residential households under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

  1. Rs 30,000 per kilo watt up to 2 kW
  2. Rs 18,000 per kW for additional capacity up to 3 kW

Subsidy for Group Housing Society/Resident Welfare Association

Rs 18,000 per kW for common facilities, including EV charging, up to 500 kW capacity (@3 kW per house) with the upper limit being inclusive of individual rooftop plants installed by individual residents in the GHS/RWA.

For special states, an additional 10% Subsidy will be applicable per kW

How can consumers register with PM Surya Ghar portal?

  • Visit the website at https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in/
  • Go to consumer page and select ‘Apply Now’. Select ‘Consumer Login’.
  • Enter valid registered consumer mobile number for registration, enter valid captcha and select “Yes, I have read all the guidelines of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Click on ‘Verify’.
  • Enter valid Mobile OTP received through SMS and then click on ‘Login’.
  • After successful login, then enter profile details of registration consumer by entering valid consumer name, e-mail, address, state, district and pin code and then click on “save”.
  • Registered consumer can submit applications either through click on ‘Apply for Solar Rooftop’ (or) through Vendor Selection. Consumer can apply for Solar Rooftop by selecting state, district and electricity distribution company/ utility and enter consumer account number, then click on ‘Fetch details’. After loading the consumer details, then click on ‘Next’ to start filling for submission of application.

 

How to apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

Step 1: Follow the above mentioned steps to register with the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. To register, provide the following details:

  • Select your State
  • Select your Electricity Distribution Company
  • Enter your Electricity Consumer Number
  • Enter Mobile Number
  • Enter Email

Step 2: Login with your consumer number and mobile number. Apply for the rooftop solar as per the form.

Step 3: If all details are found correct, technical feasibility approval will be given from the Discom concerned. Wait for the feasibility approval from Discom. Once you get the feasibility approval, install the plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM.

Step 4: Once installation is over, submit the plant details and apply for net meter.

Step 5: After installation of net meter and inspection by DISCOM, they will generate commissioning certificate from portal.

Step 6: Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days. 

Conditions

  • The applicant must use their own mobile number and email ID for registration on the national portal. The applications having email id/ mobile number of the vendor would be rejected and such vendors would be blacklisted from further participation in the scheme.
  • It must also be ensured that the electricity connection and bank account is in the name of the applicant, else the application would be rejected.

How much time would it take to get the subsidy?

Will I get constant /same energy from rooftop solar panel all year round?

No, the daily energy generation from the RTS shall be dependent on the temperature and solar irradiance among other parameters and these may not be same every day.

What is net-metering?

All solar PV systems generate power only during daytime when sun is available. In net metered systems, the generated power is utilised for self-consumption, and excess power is exported to the grid as long as grid is available. In case, where solar power is not sufficient due to cloud cover etc., power is drawn from the grid to power the loads.

What is gross metering?

In gross metering, the power generated from the Rooftop Solar plant is only fed to the grid. The system owner gets paid by the DISCOM for such exported power at a pre-decided tariff.

Do residential consumers have to pay the full cost of the system for residential sector subsidised projects?

No. The consumer has to pay the balance amount after deducting the subsidy (eligible CFA) from the L1 project cost discovered by DISCOMs.

What targets has the government kept for installation of rooftop solar plants in the country?

The government has set the target of installing 40,000 MW of rooftop solar (RTS) power by 2026.
