Step-by-step guide to clean your paintbrush

If the paint on the brush is still wet, use an old cloth or tissue paper to wipe away excess paint carefully. And if the paint on the brush is dried off, use your fingers to brush the bristles to remove the dried paint.

  1. Fill a container with warm water, enough to completely soak the bristles.
  2. Add a small amount of mild dish soap to the water. Mix the water thoroughly by stirring it.
  3. Immerse the brushes into the mixture and leave it for about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Move the brushes back and forth in the water to remove any leftover paint.
  5. Massage the bristles with your fingertips, pushing the soap through the brush hairs. Do not use too much force, it may damage the bristles.
  6. To remove the soap and paint remnants from the brushes, rinse them under running water. Continue rinsing it until the water turns clear.
  7. After cleaning the brushes, gently squeeze out any excess water from the bristles.
  8. By using your fingertips, reshape the bristles into their original shape.
  9. Leave the brushes to air dry flat on a clean cloth or paper towel. Do not keep them upright, as it may damage the bristles.
  10. Before storing or using the brushes again, make sure they are completely dry.

If you are using acrylic paints, then these steps may not be useful. Acrylic paints are water-resistant and dry quickly. You may need to follow the below instructions to remove them.

  1. Immerse the brushes in an alcohol-based solution, such as sanitiser or nail paint remover. Allow it to rest for a few minutes.
  2. The brush should then be rinsed. Massage the bristles into their original shape. Wash with soapy water until all of the paint is removed.

Next time do not let your brushes go unwashed again. Harsh chemicals and vigorous scrubbing can lead to the breaking of the bristles.
