Pocket door installation process

Choose the right pocket door

Choose the right pocket door, keeping in mind the measurements of the door opening and the aesthetic you want to go for. You can choose between several styles and types of pocket doors.

Prepare the walls

The next step is to find the location of wall studs with the help of a stud finder and then mark those locations. These are important for securing the pocket doors in their place.

Also, remove the existing door if there is one or cut out the drywall if it covers the pocket door opening.

Install frames

Read the manufacturer’s instructions and start assembling the pocket door frames and then attach them to the wall with the help of screws. Make sure the frame is properly aligned and secured to the wall. This is one of the most important steps as it lays the foundation of your pocket door and ensures optimum functionality.

Cut the opening and install track and rollers

Now, cut the opening in the wall to make space for the pocket door. You can use a saw to achieve a finished look. Make sure you make precise cuts, as there’s no room for an error in this.

The track for the door panels should be attached to the top of the frame, and then install rollers to hang them on the track. Make sure the door panels slide smoothly and don’t get stuck in between.

Install the hardware

Once you have made sure that the door panels slide in and out smoothly, you can install the handles, door locks, etc. Make sure you properly secure them with screws and that they function well.

Finishing touches

You can use a patching compound to fill any holes and to make the surface even. The last step would be to check the door’s movements and that the hardware is secured and works properly. You have successfully installed a pocket door all by yourself!
