Check out this step-wise guide to install sliding doors.

Sliding doors can be more functional as compared to normal doors while adding a modern and aesthetic touch to your space. Normal doors might not do justice to your space the way sliding doors would, adding the perfect futuristic touch. If you are thinking of replacing your traditional door with a sliding door, you very well can..

Installation of sliding doors: Prepare first

Preparing is the first step before starting the installation process of sliding doors. The most crucial element of preparation is measuring the door measurements. Make sure you measure twice for accuracy. Also, clean the area and remove all the obstacles so you can peacefully install the door.

How to choose the right sliding door?

You should consider several factors before selecting a sliding door:

The type of material: There are lots of options when it comes to choosing a material for your sliding door, from glass to wood or aluminium; you should decide the material based on the overall ambience of your space and the type of aesthetic you wish for.

Choose the right design: Sliding doors come in various designs and aesthetics; it’s up to you to choose a design that suits the room. Whether you want a more traditional door or a modern one, whether you want a frosted glass or tinted glass, these all are the choices that you should make beforehand.

Functionality: Besides deciding the look of the sliding door, it is important for you to decide whether you want a wide door with double slides or a single slide door. Choices based on the functionality of the door are also important.

Installation of sliding doors: Essentials tools

You will need a measuring tape, screwdriver, screws, level, drill, shims and mallet for this task.

Remove existing doors

Before starting the installation process of sliding doors, remove the old doors if there were any. Start by unscrewing the screws with a screwdriver and then removing the hinges and carefully detaching the door frame. Keep this door aside and then clean the area and the door frame before attaching the sliding door.

Install the sliding door

First, check the level of the area by placing a level along the floor. You can use shims to adjust the level if you need to.

With the help of screws, attach and secure the header track and make sure it is connected strongly before proceeding further.

After attaching the header tracks, attach the side tracks the same way. Secure them with screws properly. Also, make sure to check the vertical alignment.

Install the door panels

The next step is to install the door panels. Carefully and gently slide the panels into the side track and make sure the movement is swift. Move them in and out several times to make sure they don’t get stuck anywhere and make smooth movements.

Install handles and locks

Now that you have installed the door panels, attach the handles or knobs. Make sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions and secure them properly. Don’t forget to install locks for safety. You can install them on the panels or the door frame and ensure that they function smoothly.

Insulation and sealing

You can use caulking to fill in gaps and make the edges look cleaner and more finished. Also, apply weatherstripping to seal the gaps properly and protect from moisture in the future.

Test everything

The last step is to ensure that everything functions properly. Check if the doors slide smoothly and do not get stuck in between. Make sure the doors are aligned properly and that the locks function well, and that handles are tightly secured.
