Taking small steps to reduce energy consumption at home can bring a positive impact on the environment. That is, by lowering the use of electricity in our homes, we reduce the demand for power, thus minimising greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, it saves unnecessary costs. We discuss some smart ways in which you can cut down your electricity bills at home.
Use large appliances smartly
Appliances such as washing machines, air-conditioners (AC), geysers, dishwashers, etc., consume a lot of energy, resulting in higher electricity bills. You may incur high energy bills mainly because of these heavy appliances at home, especially the way you use them. For example, not using appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines to their full capacity may lead to higher energy bills. Similarly, keep your refrigerator and the freezer full by placing items to utilise power optimally. Other appliances like ACs and geysers should be used judiciously to limit energy consumption.
Choose appliances with five-star ratings
When purchasing any new appliance for your house, such as a refrigerator or an AC, opt for those having five-star ratings. Such appliances are energy-efficient and consume less electricity than those with zero or lower ratings. Invest in modern appliances and discard older ones as they may consume a lot of electricity. Nowadays, there are power-saving fans that are more energy-efficient than traditional fans.
Turn off switches and appliances when not in use
Take the initiative to ensure all lights and fans are switched off when you leave a room. Similarly, other appliances, such as televisions, water heaters, etc., should be turned off when not used. Try utilising natural light during the day as much as possible.
Go for regular maintenance
Schedule regular maintenance for home appliances such as AC will not only extend their life but also result in lesser energy consumption. Further, regularly clean the ductwork to improve your HVAC system’s efficiency.
Charge devices wisely
Do not leave the charger on for devices such as mobile phones or laptops beyond the required time. Most of us have the habit of keeping the chargers on through the night. However, this not only can damage the device but also lead to excess electricity consumption. Turn off the chargers when the devices are not in use.
