The Passport Seva Project (PSP), an initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was started in May 2010 in response to this rising demand for passports in India. Simple, effective, and transparent processes are made possible by Passport Seva for the supply of passports and related services. For government employees, this initiative establishes a nationwide networked environment.
It also connects with the state police for the physical verification of applicants’ credentials and with India Post for passport delivery. Every Indian citizen who leaves or plans to leave the country must have a passport or other acceptable form of identification. According to the Passports Act of 1967, the Indian government is authorised to issue a variety of passports and travel papers, including the Emergency Certificate and Certificate of Identity as well as the Ordinary Passport, Diplomatic Passport, and Official Passport.

Tatkaal passport service
There is a programme offered to passport applicants who want their passports immediately and out-of-turn called Tatkaal Passport Service. The passport office has the last say on whether or not to issue a passport under the Tatkaal scheme. If police verification is not necessary, a passport issued under the Tatkaal Scheme will be sent out within one working day, omitting the date the application was submitted. In the event that post-passport issuance police verification is necessary, the passport is sent out on the third working day following the day the application was submitted without first awaiting the police verification report.
Citizens can apply in person, via an external website that opens in a new window, or electronically through the Tatkaal Scheme for the issuance of a new passport or a passport renewal. Using the online fee calculator on the Tatkal Scheme website (external website; opens in a new window), you may determine the cost of passport services.
