What is sand?

Sand is a natural, granular material comprised of finely divided rock and mineral particles. It can also be a textural class of soil, that is, soil with 85% of its mass comprised of sand-sized particles. It is a renewable resource and a key component of concrete, and thus in high demand owing to the need for concrete in construction.

 

Components of sand

The key constituent of sand is silica quartz (silicon dioxide or SiO2). Another variety of sand found in islands and around the sea, is calcium carbonate. The composition varies based on local rock sources and conditions during the formation of the pebbles.

 

Types of sand

The type of sand is an integral factor when it comes to designing and making a building. It plays a huge role in the structural integrity of the building.

Sand is categorised and segregated into types on the basis of pebble size, grain, and application. The different types of sand are as follows:

  1. 20-30 sand:

It consists of local natural silica as a primary constituent and has a low water content of <0.1%. Parts of this sand are uncrushed and occur in round forms. This sand is n-standard sand, graded to pass an 850μm sieve and be retained on a 600μm sieve.

  1. Graded sand: 

It has moderately sized grain particles and contains coarse particles. It is not uniform and n-standard sand is graded between the 600μm sieve and the 150μm sieve.

  1. Standard sand: 

This type of sand consists of nearly-pure quartz and is made up of natural silica. It is primarily used in mortars and for testing hydraulic cement. It is n-silica sand, consisting of entirely naturally rounded grains.

Sand calculator: How to calculate the amount of sand?

The amount of sand needed can be calculated by calculating the volume of the area it is to be filled into. For regular shapes, simply use a simple mathematical formula to find out the volume of that particular shape and calculate. For irregularly shaped areas, divide them into small, regularly shaped portions and then add the cumulative volumetric areas of the respective shapes. 

The amount of sand is calculated using three easy steps: 

  1. Calculate the volume of the shape of the area it is to be filled into.
  2. Multiply the obtained volume by the density of the given sand. In most cases, it’ll be in the ballpark of 1600 kg/m
  3. For the cost, multiply the cost of sand per cubic unit by the volume of sand. Usually, it is done at cost per tonne. One cubic metre of sand weighs about 1.54-1.78 tonnes.

How to calculate cubic meter of sand? 

Calculating a cubic metre of sand involves computing the volume of the container into which the sand will be poured.

  • Calculate the area (the width multiplied by the length) or opening of the container.
  • Find the depth of the container.
  • Now, multiply the results (area and depth) to calculate the volume.
  • To find the weight of the sand with this volume, multiply this number by the sand’s density (or 1601.95 kg/m³).

 

What is the volume of 1 tonne of sand?

A tonne of sand is around 0.624 m³ or 22.045 ft³. Divide the mass of sand by its density, to find the volume that the amount of sand occupies. The volume of one tonne of sand is equal to 1000 kg / 1601.95 kg/m³ = 0.624 m³.
