Excavated in 1562 AD, the Hussain Sagar Lake is the largest artificial lake in Asia. Named after Hussan Shah Wali, during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah, the lake was primarily used for irrigation purposes and the water needs of the city. Hussain Sagar Lake connects Secunderabad and Hyderabad and is one of the most popular tourist places in Hyderabad. The heart-shaped lake is bordered by the Indira Park, Sanjeevaiah Park and Lumbini Park and has a huge statue of Lord Buddha carved out of white granite, standing 16 metre tall and weighing almost 350 tonne. There are almost 30 more statues of several famous personalities around the lake. The lake is a popular recreational and sightseeing spot, and attracts visitors of all age groups.
