The Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) managing director NVS Reddy, in consultation with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner and Hyderabad Police Commissioner, on June 19, 2017, appointed a committee to conduct a thorough study of the accident-prone places identified by the Traffic Police and to come up with immediate and long-term remedial measures/recommendations, to improve safety conditions along the Metro Rail corridors in the city, an official release said.
The multi-disciplinary, inter-departmental committee, consists of an independent traffic and transportation expert, HMRL engineers, besides officials from the GHMC and Hyderabad Traffic Police. The HMRL asked the panel members to interact with the Traffic Police of Cyberabad and Rachakonda commissionerates also and the L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL), the concessionaire for the metro rail project and submit its recommendations within a month.

“The panel is mandated to come up with recommendations specific to the metro rail-related road safety measures, like provision of reflective signages on metro pillars, protective measures for the central median below the metro viaduct, provision/non-provision of central median when the metro viaduct is off the main carriageway and/or in narrow roads, formation of kidney islands, pedestrian refuge areas, etc.,” the release said.
In the wake of the death of the son of an Andhra Pradesh minister and his friend, after their speeding SUV hit a metro pillar recently, the Hyderabad Traffic Police conducted a survey and identified 74 accident-prone spots, mostly involving metro rail pillars. The survey was carried out by a team, comprising experts from the city traffic police and the GHMC. Traffic police had requested the HMRL to initiate safety measures, including blinkers and signages, near the metro structures.
