Impact of artificial intelligence on home automation

Imagine controlling the appliances in one’s home, through voice commands or a smartphone. We look at how technology and artificial intelligence are being used, to improve home automation and make it more accessible to the common man

The biggest revolution of the last century that deeply impacted our lives and completely changed our lifestyle, was the breakthroughs achieved in the field of mobile technology. It changed the basics of our personal and professional life and in many ways, made the world a smaller and more accessible place. From professional responsibilities to personal chores like video conferencing, emailing, banking, shopping, navigation and even ordering food, everything became possible though the use of smartphones.

From smartphones to ‘smart homes’, technology is now redefining the way we live. The basic concept of a smart home, is to provide its occupants with services that help them save time, energy and effort, provide instant access to daily routines that are pre-configured without the need to prompt, provide security through sensor-based motion and video surveillance and also provide SOS services, in case of emergencies (especially for homes with senior citizens).

The home automation industry in India, for a very long period, was accessible only to a select few, owing to reasons like unaffordability, limited number of brands and the use of wire-based devices that needed one to reconfigure the existing layout. With the growth of technology and Wi-Fi-based devices, home automation is steadily being accepted across segments in India.

Home automation devices like motion sensors and remote appliance control units, have witnessed improved demand in the last few years, as these devices can easily integrate with the existing layout, are moderately priced and offer control facility through apps, which are globally accessible. These devices also easily integrate with voice-based artificial intelligence (AI) devices like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, to further improve access control.

These devices are capable of being configured as per our requirements and today, we can practically talk to our home and control each and every appliance and device, through voice-based technology.

Benefits offered through home automation

Appliance control and settings

  • Appliances can be controlled through apps, from any given location.
  • The use of latest technologies, has given rise to products that provide instant access to services and can be configured through easy steps, to create settings based on one’s mood.

Distributed automation and affordability

  • New-age products provide the flexibility to install and control a few needed devices, instead of requiring to automate the whole home or office.
  • Home automation products can be easily installed by any trained electrician, in a matter of few minutes, providing instant control of devices.

Energy and monetary savings due to home automation

App-based devices provide you the control, to manage devices when not required. Similarly, motion sensor-based devices can be configured to automatically switch off in the absence of people in the room and can also be configured to provide services, when one’s presence is detected.

Integration with voice-controlled devices

Several new age home automation products easily integrate with existing products like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, for further ease of use.

Safety and security with home automation

Home automation services also offer security features like video and sensor-based surveillance, appliance malfunction warning and video monitoring from any part of the world. Moreover, the devices available today, come with the option for distributed (partial) automation, thereby, allowing users to pick and choose services as required.
