Bangalore, Karnataka will have India’s first 3D-printed Post office. The three-storied 3D-printed building will be located in Cambridge Layout in the Halasuru area. With the clearance for the construction granted by the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, the project will be constructed by Larsen & Toubro, the only company undertaking 3D printing enabled construction in India. Designs of the construction have already been submitted to the post office and construction of this 3d post office will be completed within a month. The project will be in collaboration with IIT Madras.
Industry experts suggest that a project’s cost comes down to around one-fourth of the original cost when the 3D printing construction model is used as against the traditional way of construction. It also has a very significant impact on the time taken for the project construction.
According to TNIE, S Rajendra Kumar, Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka Circle said, “A building of approximately 1,000 sq ft would cost less than Rs 25 lakh by using 3D printing technology, working out to around just 25 per cent of the normal construction cost.” He added that use of this technology could offer the postal department a feasible alternative to provide post office buildings in areas which desperately require them.
Earlier, India’s first 3D-printed house with a built-up area of 600 sq ft was built within the IIT-Madras campus.
