February 1, 2024: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her sixth consecutive Budget on February 1, 2024. Her Budget Speech that lasted a little less than an hour had women as a major focal point.
Sitharaman while presenting the Interim Budget 2024-25 said that the empowerment of women through entrepreneurship, ease of living and dignity has gained momentum in 10 years. This is in line with the government’s focus on Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Illustrating the women empowerment programs supported by the government, Sitharaman mentioned that around 30 crore Mudra Yojana loans have been given to women entrepreneurs till now. Additionally, over 70% houses under the PM Awas Yojana in rural areas are given to women as sole or joint owners.
Also around 1 crore women have been assisted by 83 lakh self-help groups (SHGs) to become Lakhpati didis.
Emphasising the empowerment of women, PM Modi said, “Our goal was to make 2 crore Lakhpatis among women. Now, this goal has been increased to make 3 crore Lakhpatis.”
Real estate reactions
Ashwin Sheth, CMD, Ashwin Sheth Group said, “The allocation of 70% of PMAY houses to women in rural areas is of special significance and will go a long way towards providing secure living spaces and advancing women empowerment.
Avneesh Sood, Director Eros Group said, “Union Budget 2024 signifies a pivotal moment for the Indian real estate sector with its focus on inclusive development. The budget’s acknowledgment of over 70% of houses under PM Awas Yojana going to women reinforces the socio-economic impact.”
